The Head of the Department
The department is headed by “Assist. Prof. Dr Hemn Muhammed Salih” who is a lecturer in the Department of Physics at Koya University. He earned his BSc in Physics from Koya University in 2009, followed by an MSc in Physics and Technology of Nuclear Reactors from the University of Birmingham, UK, in 2013, and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics from Firat University, Turkey, in 2023. Hemn’s research interests include natural radioactivity, earthquake precursors, soil air radon gas time series analysis using ARIMA modeling, and gamma shielding materials. He has published several articles in peer-reviewed international journals.
Vision of the Department
The Research Park Department is envisaged to be among the leading research centers in innovative, sustainable technologies and the academic industry interface not only within the Kurdistan region but also in the wider world. In line with achieving this, the department places specific emphasis on green technologies, including solar and wind energies, to contribute to the university’s commitment toward sustainability. The department’s mission deals with the research challenges of the environment for socioeconomic development through practical solutions, not only to establish the tradition of Koya University in various academic and industrial research fields but also to make it prominent.
Objectives of the Department
The Research Park Department seeks to establish a collaborative platform through which academia, industry, and government join efforts in addressing high-priority challenges. It provides sophisticated facilities and resources for cutting-edge research and innovation, especially renewable energy and sustainability. The department focuses on the commercialization of research through knowledge transfer between researchers and businesses. In addition, the department is committed to contributing to regional sustainability by enforcing energy-efficient behaviors and developing renewable energy solutions. Ultimately, this will add to Koya University’s national and international prestige as a hub in sustainability research and help regional economic growth and green technology development.
List of the Activities
The Research Park Department is involved in several important activities: from organizing the workshop on energy this coming December, focusing on the debate related to sustainable energy, to collaboration with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics; an application for a grant to cover the financial load of scientific activity, reinforcement of research performed within the structure, is already under process. Another flagship project is digitizing the university’s weather station data and networking with internationally recognized data providers, which would add value to climate change research. The department is also researching fish farms, studying sustainable practices that would be beneficial to both environmental and regional development. Such activities depict the ongoing efforts of the department regarding innovation, research, and collaboration as stated in the broader objectives.
